Hobart Festival of  Women Writers is excited to welcome Linda Lowen as a Participating Writer for Festival 2019.

Linda Lowen is a writing instructor whose advice on the craft of writing has been published in Writer’s Digest (Sept. 2019) and The Writer (April and May 2018) magazines. Her short nonfiction has appeared in The New York Times Sunday Styles section under the Tiny Love/Modern Love column (June 2019). Lowen is a book reviewer for Publisher’s Weekly, and reads for several literary magazines including Stone Canoe and Hippocampus. She is a theater reviewer for her hometown newspaper, the Syracuse Post-Standard.

In 2017 Linda Lowen founded AlwaysWantedToWrite.com, a writing studio based in Syracuse, NY offering workshops and individual coaching. She’s a writing instructor for one of the country’s largest YMCA-based arts program, The Downtown Writer’s Center, and she has presented workshops from the Chautauqua Institution to HippoCamp, the creative nonfiction writing conference sponsored by Hippocampus. In 2019 Linda Lowen launched  StruckByWriting.com which offers seaside writing retreats and residencies from one week to one month during the off season in the Outer Banks of North Carolina (April 2019), Cape Cod (October 2019), and Myrtle Beach (February 2020). She also hosts a unique, intensive, all-inclusive week — limited to two writers at a time — in a Great Lakes lighthouse — WriteAtTheLight.com.

Linda Lowen has written for national media outlets including MSN.com and MSN Living, and About.com /the New York Times Company. While at About.com, she was awarded an EMMA (Exceptional Merit in Media Award) from the National Women’s Political Caucus.

A late-blooming fiction writer, she has been selected for Viable Paradise #23, a competitive and intensive weeklong science fiction/fantasy writing workshop held each October on Martha’s Vineyard; its 24 participants are chosen from applicants worldwide.

For Festival of Women Writers 2019, Linda Lowen will present the workshop, Going Deep with Micro Memoir.

Much of life is painful. Many write to process grief, fear, and regret, yet in reawakening memories we risk opening old wounds. Micro memoir — 200 words or less — is one way to access darker, more difficult experiences. This spare, lean form offers the liberation of release while avoiding the dangers of immersion. Instead of writing about feelings, the focus is on brief events, details, actions, and reactions, resulting in prose that’s a gut punch to the reader. This workshop unpacks micro memoir for writers at every level and demonstrates why it’s uniquely suited to short, deep narrative dives.
